Pentagon leaders warn debt default could endanger troops' pay

(The Hill) - The Pentagon’s top two officials on Thursday warned lawmakers that a default on the nation’s debt would put troops’ pay in danger and benefit China. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee that busting the debt ceiling would put U.S. reputation at “substantial risk” in the world. “There’s just a number of things that we're working with allies and partners on that would come into question as to whether or not we'll be able to execute programs, but most important, this will affect the livelihood of our of our troops and our civilians,” Austin told lawmakers. “We won't be able to pay people like we should, and I think that's something that China and everybody else can exploit.” Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Mark Milley, who spoke alongside Austin, said China already openly describes the United States as a declining power. Defaulting on the debt “will only reinforce that thought and embolden China and increase risk to ...

City to hold ceremony to honor historic Austin park

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Austin Parks and Recreation Department said a new Texas Historical Commission Marker will be unveiled at a downtown Austin park Friday morning. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at Wooldridge Square Park at 900 Guadalupe St, according to Parks and Rec. The department said in an April 28 release the historical marker "replaces an existing outdated marker and provides an expanded explanation of the park's historic significance."According to the Parks Department release, when Judge Edwin Waller platted the City of Austin in 1839, he designated four public squares in each quadrant of the city. Parks and Rec said only three of the original squares remained, and Wooldridge Square, in the northwest quadrant of downtown, was relatively unchanged and retains a high degree of historic integrity. For its first sixty years, Wooldridge Square was used by the public but remained "municipally undeveloped", according to Parks and Rec. By 1907, improvements were made to the park, a...

HOUSTON (AP) — Thirteen people dead in two mass shootings. Eight immigrants killed when an SUV slams into a crowded bus stop. The likely approval of legislation that would let the Republican governor overturn elections in the most populous county, a Democratic stronghold. All in the past two weeks. These issues and the forces behind them — anger and guns, immigration turmoil, deep political divisions about what democracy means — are playing out across American life in various ways. But in Texas, with its immense size and a population that grows by more than 1,000 people a day, the stage is far bigger — and often louder. It’s enough to make even the proudest Texan wrestle with how he sees the state."This is out of control right now,” said Jay Leeson, an illustrator and cartoonist who lives in Lubbock, a city in the Texas High Plains. He describes himself as a “conservative West Texan” whose kids “know how to handle guns, know how to ride horses, know how t...

KIRKWOOD, Mo. - Questions about 'racy' content in this year's yearbook have been raised by some Kirkwood High School parents.Inside the 400-page yearbook is a portion where students share their opinions on hookups, the concept of a casual sexual relationship, and its benefits and consequences. A picture of birth control was in the background.Kirkwood parent Derek Byers has seen the yearbook. His son, Wyatt, is graduating in two days. Byers ran the Kirkwood scholarship program for six years. He said he's in touch with student life and is not upset about his son's yearbook."The students of Kirkwood are provided a very unique autonomy. The autonomy is both in the school yearbook and the newspaper," Byers said. "This has been a tradition in Kirkwood for decades." Anheuser-Busch plans recovery after Bud Light boycott

ST. LOUIS - Anheuser-Busch's distributors from around the country met in St. Louis on Thursday. They heard firsthand about changes being made regarding the Bud Light transgender controversy.Anheuser-Busch invited the distributors to the downtown Hyatt hotel for a yearly meeting on summer marketing plans. It was the first such meeting since transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney’s viral social media posts with Bud Light in early April. She received a special edition can with her picture on it. Market analysts report Bud Light sales are still down more than 20% for the past month. Bud Light boycotts appear to be driving down sales of fellow Anheuser-Busch brands like Budweiser and Michelob Ultra, which are down but not as sharply.  Moving past controversy, Anheuser-Busch plans to recover losses “It can be risky for a brand to jump in and align itself with a certain cause, even with the best intentions,” said Dustin Smith, a business professor at Webster University. He ...
