Towards a more digital social security co-ordination: Commission proposes steps to make it easier for Europeans to live, work and travel abroad The Commission has proposed concrete steps to further digitalise the coordination of social security systems in Europe, in a dedicated Communication. It lays out actions to make access to social security services quicker and simpler across borders by making full use of digital tools, reducing administrative burden for citizens and business. This will improve the exchanges of information between national social security institutions and speed up the recognition and granting of eligible benefits across borders. It will thus make it easier for Europeans to live, work and travel abroad, for companies to do business in other EU countries, and for national administrations to coordinate social security across borders.Despite previous initiatives to improve the cross-border flow of social security information, national institutions, healthcare providers and labour inspectorates still face difficulties accessing and sharing data, due to insufficient interoperability between national systems. ...

Controversial transgender policy up for vote in Orange Unified School District The latest battlefront in the culture wars was unfolding Thursday night at the Orange Unified School District Board meeting where officials were voting on whether to enact a controversial parent notification policy regarding transgender students.  After a deeply divisive evening, with vocal opposition and support for the parental notification policy, the vote was still underway late into the evening.  The new policy, if adopted, would require schools in the district to notify parents if their child requests to be identified or treated as a gender other than what’s listed on their birth certificate. The policy would include requests to use pronouns that don’t align with their biological sex or gender or a name different from their legal name. Additionally, parents would be notified if a student asks to use a restroom or changing facility of a gender different than the one listed on their official paperwork. Parent Rosa Otero, who supports the policy, believes that pare...

Angels’ Luis Rengifo injures left biceps with a swing in the on-deck circle ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Luis Rengifo strained his left biceps while taking a swing in the on-deck circle Thursday night, forcing him to leave the Los Angeles Angels’ 3-2 victory over Cleveland in the first inning. The Angels’ trainers left the dugout to check on Rengifo after he took a practice swing with the heavy bat while Brandon Drury was at the plate. Rengifo was slumped over in apparent pain, and he eventually walked off the field to the clubhouse.“As he went to drop (the bat), he felt something in his (biceps),” Angels manager Phil Nevin said. “This one, it doesn’t look good. I’m sick for him. Hopefully, we get good news tomorrow.”Rengifo will have more tests Friday.Randal Grichuk, who was supposed to have the day off, singled after pinch-hitting for Rengifo, who was playing right field and batting third.About 2 1/2 hours later, Grichuk delivered a walk-off single with the bases loaded and two outs, ending the Angels’ first win in seven games.Rengifo, wh...

Coco Gauff wins a US Open semifinal delayed by a climate protest. Will face Sabalenka in the final NEW YORK (AP) — Coco Gauff never wavered one bit Thursday night. Not when match point after match point went by the wayside. Not during a 40-shot exchange that ultimately helped decide the outcome. And not, most distracting of all, when her U.S. Open semifinal against Karolina Muchova was interrupted for 50 minutes by environmental activists — one of whom glued his bare feet to the concrete floor in the stands. It’s been rather obvious for quite some time that Gauff is no ordinary teenager. Now she is one win away from becoming a Grand Slam champion.Gauff, a 19-year-old from Florida, reached her first final at Flushing Meadows by defeating Muchova 6-4, 7-5 on what was anything but an ordinary evening.“I really believe that now I have the maturity and ability to do it,” said Gauff, who came close to a major trophy last year in the French Open but lost the title match. “You know, regardless of what happens on Saturday, I’m really proud of how I have been handling the last few weeks.”Th...

Randal Grichuk delivers walk-off RBI, Angels score twice in the 9th to beat Cleveland 3-2 ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Randal Grichuk was looking forward to getting Thursday off for physical recovery and mental recalibration after the Los Angeles Angels put him on waivers for the second time in two weeks. The worn-out outfielder was forced into action anyway in the first inning after teammate Luis Rengifo hurt himself with a swing in the on-deck circle — maybe the most freakish version yet of the steady misfortune that has pelted the struggling Angels all summer.About three hours later, Grichuk got a hit that reminded him and the Halos just how much fun baseball can be.Grichuk delivered a two-out, walk-off single with the bases loaded, and the Angels snapped their six-game skid with a 3-2 comeback victory over the Cleveland Guardians.Kyren Paris tied the score with his first career RBI before scoring the winning run for the Angels, who rallied in the ninth against Emmanuel Clase (2-8) for only their second win in 11 games. A lengthy rally came down to Grichuk, and he drilled a ...
